I attempted to install the nvidia driver following the 'debian way.' as described here. Attempting to manually set refresh rates didn't have an effect (not sure what my specific monitor requires, so i did a broad range). vesa hard crashed the system every time-so i was stuck with 'nv'. I wasn't having any luck with testing different combinations of configuration options using dpkg-reconf.

The relevant portions of my nf are as follows: The directory '/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType' does not exist. The directory '/usr/x11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1' does not exist. The directory '/usr/x11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi' does not exist. The directory '/usr/x11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi' does not exist. The directory '/usr/x11R6/lib/X11/cyrillic' does not exist. So i'm really at a loss on how to troubleshoot in the absence of terminal readouts to give me errors. If i then issue 'startx', the screen goes blank and the system apparently hangs-I can't get any terminal readouts (ie no ctl-alt F1, F2, F6, F7) nor can i do a ctl-alt-backspace to kill the process to get back to the terminal. I then attempted to install X by issuing the 'apt-get install xorg' command. I did a base install selecting just the 'laptop' and 'system base' options. I'm attempting to do a net install using the Etch AMD64 install CD (180MB version) on my notebook (Sager NP2090 or Compal IFL90).
